WADDESDON

Waddesdon is a village of 2,097 people (2011 census, including Fleet Marston and Upper Winchendon), 6 miles west-north-west of Aylesbury on the A41. The village is best known for Waddesdon Manor, a French Renaissance-style château built between 1874 and 1889 for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, now run by the National Trust and home to one of the finest collections of French 18th-century decorative arts in the world. The Rothschild family rebuilt much of the village itself, including the Five Arrows pub and hotel, a cricket pavilion and the village hall. The parish church, St Michael and All Angels, dates from 1190.

Commuting: around 6 miles to Aylesbury via the A41; the nearest stations are Aylesbury Vale Parkway (4 miles) and Aylesbury town centre (6.5 miles).

Schools: Waddesdon Church of England School, the only Church of England secondary school in Buckinghamshire, with around 1,000 pupils aged 11-18, built on land donated by Dorothy de Rothschild.
